Sonia Weliwitigoda is a sophomore majoring in journalism at Fordham University. She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., but grew up in Washington, D.C. Sonia started at WFUV as a freshman a day-of news reporter for the “What’s What" podcast covering pressing New York City politics. She now also hosts Fordham Conversations, a biweekly segment on broader global issues zoomed in through a Fordham lens. Sonia is also part of the Strike-a-Chord producing team, which features local nonprofits on air to raise awareness of their work. In high school, she created and produced the podcast “Through Our Eyes” in which she facilitated conversations about cultural acceptance, self-identity, and building community among students of color.  She also interned for two years at WAMU 88.5 under “All Things Considered" host Tamika Smith. Outside of FUV, Sonia is a member of the Fordham Honors Program Scholars for Justice, a news reporter for Fordham TV, an athlete and executive board member of Fordham’s Club Swim team, a mentor for students at a Bronx High School, and an ambassador and tour guide for Fordham. Looking ahead, Sonia hopes to continue reporting on the culture and politics of New York City.
