Reduced Prices at NYC Grocery Stores

On Monday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a new initiative to lower the cost of some products by 30 percent at the administration’s planned New York City-owned grocery stores. 

The core set of reduced goods will include fresh produce, meat, and seafood, along with items such as cheese, milk, nuts, rice, and bread. 

Mamdani said the savings from the discount are projected to reduce New Yorkers’ average grocery bill by 15 percent, which would be around $1,000 per year.  

Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su said that rising grocery prices are making the city less affordable, something that is driving out New Yorkers.

“Wars an ocean away raise the cost of fuel, and that cost gets passed on to you," explained Su. "Erratic tariffs that have raised the prices of everything from coffee beans to tin cans show up in grocery prices too. Farms across this country are struggling, destabilizing our food supply, affecting what's available on the shelf and what it costs. And some of it is just plain old price gouging.” 

Mamdani said this idea of reduced-price groceries is not a new one. He mentioned that former Mayor Fiorello La Guardia spearheaded the creation of municipally owned markets to reduce the cost of groceries after witnessing the food riots of 1917. 

“For many, that 30 percent discount is the difference between an evening spent around the dinner table with family or working another double shift to make ends meet,” said Mamdani.

Mamdani said his administration is searching for qualified grocers to serve as operators of the five city-owned stores.
