Sam Sumpter is a substitute host for WFUV. In addition to DJing, the Crown Heights resident is also a journalist, and the founder of Bands do BK, a guide to Brooklyn by the musicians who call the borough home or might be passing through on their way to a gig. An ode and oral history to diverse neighborhoods and sounds, the project evolved into a book and music-fan memoir, Bands do BK, published by Lit Riot Press in September 2022.
In addition, Sumpter is the manager of a New York punk band, Mary Shelley. She also books, produces, and promotes live shows and fundraisers on stages across Brooklyn and Manhattan, including Arlene’s Grocery on the Lower East Side where she works as a talent buyer. Sumpter loves running around the city and says she attends “an insane amount of concerts,” plays on a co-ed soccer team, indulges in frequent bar-and-bookstore crawls, and takes a lot of “coffee-and-pastry strolls” through Prospect Park.
A 2011 graduate of the University of Texas in Austin, Sumpter is a dedicated fan of local New York bands, including Two-Man Giant Squid, Go Home, Dead Tooth, and Ok Cowgirl.
She is a newcomer to this radio station, but an enthusiastic one. “I gained a real, deep appreciation for FUV when I attended the holiday show at the Beacon Theatre in December 2022,” she says. “I got even more excited when I caught White Reaper play Rockwood Music Hall at a station event. FUV is NYC, and as someone who loves this city so much, it’s both amazing and surreal to have this opportunity to be part of it.”
