UKNY For July 1
As UKNY begins its sixth year tonight at 11 — on this sweltering first day of July — an hour of globally-minded music that reflects the day, the week, and the year so far. Since it's Canada Day, and this afternoon there's an excellent concert celebrating our wonderful northern neighbors at Central Park Summerstage with Broken Social Scene and Mélissa Laveaux, we'll hear from both, plus other poutine-loving bands.
The FIFA World Cup is ongoing, so some internationally-minded music from artists like Kinshasa's Jupiter and Okwess and Melbourne's Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. And there will be plenty of British offerings too, from Florence and the Machine, who released a fourth album, High as Hope on Friday, the Derbyshire trio Haiku Salut, Manchester's New Luna and more. (England plays Colombia on July 3 at 2 p.m. EDT).
Away for the weekend? You can catch up to UKNY on demand after broadcast in the Weekend Archives.
