Miss Grit is the the New York-based project of musician, producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Margaret Sohn.
Known for creating music that lives in a space between electronic experimentation, indie rock, dream pop, and trip-hop, Miss Grit has developed a sound that is both meticulously constructed and deeply human with a foundation of layered synths and guitar, pulsating rhythms, and atmospheric textures. It's an immersive backdrop for Sohn’s introspective songwriting.
Their music has a rare ability to feel futuristic and intimate at the same time, balancing cool electronic precision with moments of emotional vulnerability and beautifully unexpected tension. Their 2023 debut album, Follow the Cyborg, boldly grappled with dystopian themes and racial identity (Sohn is Korean-American), bolstered by their adroit guitar work.
Miss Grit's recent single “Tourist Mind,” is a hypnotic, beat-driven track that made me want to dig deeply into the world they were creating. Sohn's second album, Under My Umbrella, is out now on Mute and deftly showcases Sohn’s knack for turning questions of identity, connection, solitude, and self-perception into compelling sonic landscapes.
For this "NY Slice" session, Miss Grit played a trio of album highlights: “Tourist Mind," "Stranger" and "Waste Me." They also took the "NY Slice" pop quiz and gave fellow musician Chanel Beads and Knockdown Center a big shout out.
