A few years ago, the Women's National Hockey League sent me a pitch for "NY Slice," describing their sound as "post mom rock." As a new mom, I was immediately intrigued. Turns out, none of them are moms — and not one of them plays hockey. False advertising. But I accepted it and after listening to their charming songs — they have two EPs called We're Young, We're Hot, We're Best Friends and Fishbowl — I was immediately won over.

The band's indie-folk songs feel warm and relatable, like old friends. So it was no surprise that when we actually met for the first time during this "NY Slice" session in early December, it was very easy and fun.

The Women's National Hockey League's whole crew came in: Kristen Nodell (lead vocals, guitar), James Russin (guitar, backing vocals), Julie Larsen (bass, backing vocals), John Ziola (keys) and Matt Russell (drums). They performed "Madison" and "TV Girl" in Studio A and then Kristen and Julie took the "NY Slice" pop quiz (and professed their love of the Beatles and Fleetwood Mac).

Also, try to go see them play live and meet your new best friends.
