UKNY For September 2
The start of September means the slow fade of summer, and it's always a good time for reflection on the year. All this week, we've been resurrecting some of our favorite FUV Live sessions from the past handful of months, so on UKNY at 11, we'll return to the very special acoustic session that the shoegazing pioneers of Ride did at FUV's Studio A back in July, playing a three-song set from Weather Diaries, the band's first new album in 21 years.
It was my second opportunity to chat with Mark Gardener, Andy Bell, Loz Colbert and Steve Queralt (they were at FUV in 2015 too) and the four friends discussed the experience of recording together again after such a long time and the outside factors — like Brexit and British (and American) political discord — that influenced some of their songwriting on Weather Diaries.
Also, new music from the Horrors, Kelly Lee Owens, and the Toronto band Common Deer with a song that feels like the segue from summer to autumn.
Like you, I've been thinking of the Texans who have had a dreadful, exhausting week in the path of Hurricane Harvey — please do what you can to help ease their pain by giving to verified charities and first responders that are on the ground and making a difference. NPR has come up with a helpful list, as has FUV's Strike a Chord.
Away for the long weekend? You can always catch up to UKNY on-demand immediately after broadcast via the Weekend Archives on WFUV.org.
