UKNY for October 24

Director Edgar Wright's affinity for twisty thrillers is apparent in his unsettlng new time travel film, "Last Night in Soho," starring Anya Taylor-Joy of "Queen's Gambit" fame. The chiller is set partly in the Sixties —in a somewhat spoiler-free encapsulation, Taylor-Joy embodies a London nightclub singer with Cilla Black-level aspirations who is appearing in the dreams of a contemporary fashion design student, played by Thomasin McKenzie. Wright's giddy soundtrack includes a generous helping of Burt Bacharach and Hal David covers by superstars of that era, like Black, Dusty Springfield, and Sandie Shaw, plus more mid-century manna, from The Walker Brothers to The Who. Taylor-Joy is given a plum to cover — Petula Clark's irresistible 1964 hit "Downtown," with both downtempo and uptempo moods. I'll be playing one of those versions on tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m. "Last Night in Soho" is in theatres this Friday, October 29.
Also in the mix, cool duos: Ghent-based Charlotte Adigéry and longtime collaborator Bolis Pupul, who share a sardonic new single, and Oh Wonder's Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West, whose new album, 22 Break, actually saved the London couple's foundering relationship.
Another track from Elbow's forthcoming Flying Dream 1 too, out on November 19, and Reykjavík's Laufey, who has already sold out her Gramercy Theatre show in New York on December 2. And new turns from Sea Power, Wasuremono, Fold, Cate Le Bon and much more.
That's "UKNY," Sundays from 11p.m.-midnight, streaming online and available after broadcast in the Weekend Archives.
