The global lockdown reconfigured how bands recorded — and Elbow's journey since 2020 was one of remote writing for Guy Garvey, Craig Potter, Mark Potter, and Pete Turner in London and Manchester, coming together at Brighton Theatre Royal to "perform, perfect and record" their songs. Those tracks, described by Garvey as "hushed night-time missives" are wistful heartbeat of the band's ninth album, Flying Dream 1, released November 19.
On tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m., the album's first elegiac single, a track inspired by the band's late friend, musician Bryan Glancy who passed away in 2006. Glancy's spirit guided Elbow's Mercury Prize-winning album too, 2008's The Seldom Seen Kid.
Coventry rapper Pa Salieu has released an electrifying new EP, Afrikan Rebel, and so has Manchester-based Jane Weaver, who revisits some of the songs on her 2021 album, Flock, and releases remixes and unreleased tracks on a new digital EP, Sunset Dreams.
London's Miso Extra spins her Japanese-British background into a culturally inclusive "misoverse" via her songs, and Weird Milk tease another track from their second EP, We Were Strangers, out on November 17. The Hull and Leeds quartet bdrmm are back with their first release since their 2020 debut, Bedroom, and take a darker, atmospheric turn, reflecting on personal travails.
