The grizzled Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods has never shied from blunt political assessments and profanity — and the very prolific Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn will release their 11th studio album, Spare Ribs, in January.

Given the first fantastic single catapulting off this new album, the slinky shuffle of "Mork N Mindy," featuring Leicestershire's Billy Nomates, it's going to be one of Sleaford Mods' best, delivering concise social commentary, the added grief of the coronavirus and governmental stumbles, and plenty of cussing, delivered with acerbic East Midlands fury. On tonight's "UKNY" at 11, you'll hear a cleaned-up edit of their new single (thank goodness it exists for radio because the track is so good), with the promise that it might be your earworm of the week ahead.

Also, more sharp spoken word storytelling via the Leeds band Yard Act, as well as Newcastle-based Martha Hill, whose new EP, Summer Up North, deftly shows off all aspects of her songwriting, with humor and empathy (earlier this year, I played her terrific single "Grilled Cheese"). There are two beautiful new singles from Biig Piig's Jess Smyth, Cork-born, raised in Spain, and now based in London — I'll get to one of them — and Camden's Bakar has a sunny new single.

It's just one hour, but expect Nubya Garcia, Working Men's Club, Nubiyan Twist, Firestations, Four Tet, peripatetic Australian Julia Jacklin, and much more.

That's UKNY, Sundays from 11 p.m. to midnight on 90.7FM, streaming online, and available after broadcast in the Weekend Archives.
