Taking advantage of the "NY" bit of the "UKNY" moniker — there are an array of New York-based bands and artists with an ardent overseas fanbase — sometimes eclipsing the support they find in their own backyard. One such band (although pretty beloved here in town) is the fast-rising Model/Actriz whose electrifying live gigs are legendary (and noted by "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," which gave the group its TV debut earlier this year).

The band's explosively danceable second album, 2025's Pirouette, is a decided shift from what frontman Cole Haden describes as the "punishing" tone of their 2023 debut, Dogsbody. For a "UKNY" conversation with the thoughtful and candid Haden, we discusssed the often autobiographical lyrics of Pirouette which skitter between his childhood and identity as a queer kid growing up in a conservative Delaware town.

The interview arrives ahead of Model/Actriz's extensive headline tour of North America — which begins on September 10 in Philly — and continues in Europe and Britain this fall. There are two shows at Brooklyn's Warsaw this Friday, September 12 (sold out), and Saturday, September 13 (perhaps some tickets left?).
