UKNY for May 23
It's been six years since Manchester's Julie Campbell, who records as LoneLady, released her moody, groovy, and masterful second album, Hinterland. Campbell's ecstatic electrofunk has been grounded in her love of the gritty, grey city where she was born, but for her new album, Former Things, released on June 25, a temporary relocation to London (plus some key vintage equipment) offered a vibrant alternate perspective. On tonight's "UKNY" at 11, another song from Campbell's forthcoming Eighties-inspired odyssey.
Also in the mix, a resonant track from Sons of Kemet's latest opus, Black to the Future, and an indignant political punch from Yorkshire's The Lounge Society. South London's Greentea Peng contemplates a fickle paradise and Melbourne's Hiatus Kaiyote look to Rio de Janeiro's rhythmic spirit for their next release. And Billie Marten's new single powerfully (and with prescient timing) reflects recent British headlines, speaking to the nagging sense of unease for any woman walking on her own.
That's "UKNY," Sundays from 11p.m.-midnight on 90.7, streaming online, and available in the Weekend Archives after broadcast.
