UKNY for May 17

This is the first "UKNY" in its 13-year history to ever air fully in daylight, after its move earlier this year to 7 p.m. from it's night owl 11 p.m. berth. (Sunset is at 8:08 p.m. tonight.)

To celebrate that radiant fact, some luminous new releases from Little Simz, who recently released her trap-leaning Sugar Girl EP, which follows last year's excellent Lotus, and finds her collaborating with producer Jakwob and guests.

The buzz around London's Little Grandad has been hornet-loud, with sold-out gigs in the UK (including Oxford Street's The 100 Club when I was in the UK this spring), lots of BBC love, and now — finally —  their very first double A-side singles, released over this past week. The group's edgier, grittier British brush with Americana is intriguing, a trend that UK bands like Westside Cowboy and Witch Post (the latter whom I'll also play tonight), have been exploring as well.

Knats' second album, A Great Day in Newcastle, co-produced with Geordie Greep (ex of black midi), is a triumph for the jazz trio, circling the socioeconomic woes of the north with a lash of punk and smart perspective.

Caroline will be paying a long overdue — and rare — visit to New York on May 21 to play Knockdown Center and have released a new remix with Giant Claw, who'll be opening that show along with claire rosay.

Also in tonight's mix, new releases from Cambridge's The Healing Power of Horses, Los Angeles's Untitled, the return of Mystery Jets, Amsterdam's Personal Trainer, and New York's own aja monet, who plays Carnegie Hall on Wednesday night, May 20.
