UKNY For May 15
The Northern Irish-Dutch duo Fräulein, the partnership of singer and guitarist Joni Samuels and drummer Karsten van der Tol, are on the brink of releasing their debut EP, A Small Taste, via Practise Music, but the pair, based in London, have been releasing a string of prickly, exhilarating singles since last year. They were one of my favorite discoveries of last year, and on "UKNY" tonight at 11 p.m., something new from the fiery duo who count PJ Harvey and Big Thief as their many influences.
It's an hour of brand new releases, from Leeds' equally thrilling English Teacher, Manchester's danceable Porij, and Nigerian-born, London-based Obongjayar who finally released his much-anticipated debut album, Some Nights I Dream of Doors, on Friday. Mercury Prize nominees Sports Team come barreling back with their second album, Gulp!, on August 12 and Poppy Ajudha's debut album, The Power in Us, emerges as one of the most galvanzing, politcally-minded releases of the year.
That and more on "UKNY," late night British and international releases Sundays from 11 p.m.-midnight on 90.7 FM, streaming online, and available in the Weekend Archives after broadcast.
