UKNY for May 12
Three phases of tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m., kicking off with new releases from beabadoobee (who releases her third album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves on August 16) and the Miki Berenyi Trio, led by Berenyi, whose other band is Piroshka (and formerly Lush). The London-based Wasia Project has been touring with Laufey in the States, so their latest release, and Peggy Gou is gearing up for her debut album, I Hear You, which comes out in less than a month, on June 7. Also, the Brooklyn trio Fcukers, whom I loved at first set at SXSW, are already kicking up a dust storm with just three recorded songs to their name (tricky to say on the radio) — including a new single this past week, their first for Ninja Tune.
Mother's Day can be joyful as well as complicated and sad, but a nascent song on a new Broadcast compilation of the late Trish Keenan's demos and unfinished songs, called Spell Blanket: Collected Demos 2006-2009, inspired a maternally-minded set (and I miss my mom).
Steve Albini's sudden passing last week was a shock to everyone, especially the musicians who knew him, collaborated with him, and loved him. A pair of songs in his memory, including one from American folk rocker Nina Nastasia who worked with Steve for all seven of her solo albums, including 2022's Riderless Horse; their collaboration has been one of music's most compelling for over two decades.
You can listen to "UKNY," Sundays 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7FM, streaming online, and available in the Archives after broadcast if you're not an insomniac.
