UKNY for July 7
Didn't have a chance to travel over this long holiday weekend? Tonight at 11, UKNY — which begins its seventh year — will take you on a quick trip to South Africa. The latest Africa Express album, called Egoli, came to life in Johannesburg where a gathering of musicians, including ringleader Damon Albarn, Gruff Rhys, Moonchld Sanelly, Mahotella Queens, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner, Radio 123, Sibot, Nonku Phiri, Ghetts, Otim Alpha, Mr. Jukes, Georgia, Morena Leraba, and many others came together to write and record an album in seven days, with the sprawling city and its music as their muse. Egoli, which is the Xhosa name for Johannesburg and is translated as "city of gold," is released on July 12.
We'll head back north to the Manchester International Festival, where New Order settled for a residency back in 2017 at the Old Granada Studios. Those shows are now the basis for a new live album, ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes, released on July 12 too.
Also, brand new Burial, Freya Ridings, a terrific cover of one of the greatest driving songs of all time (for your return from road tripping needs), and an FUV Live session with Glasgow's Honeyblood.
UKNY airs on 90.7 from 11 p.m.-midnight on Sunday nights, and you can catch up on demand in the Weekend Archives.
