UKNY for July 2
The announcement of a new Slowdive album, Everything is Alive, after just six years didn't feel like a particularly long wait at all — after all, the wait for 2017's Slowdive took 22 years. Unfortunately, as many of us have experienced over the last handful of years, loss is threaded through this new album: vocalist and guitarist Rachel Goswell's mother passed away in 2020 and drummer Simon Scott lost his father the same year. While grief sifts through the band's new album, released on September 1, as always, Slowdive's penchant for beauty reigns. On "UKNY" tonight at 11 p.m., new Slowdive — and the band plays Webster Hall on September 27 and 28.
And I buried the lede — tonight's episode marks the tenth anniversary of "UKNY." The show debuted on July 6, 2013 (I'm a little early), but to celebrate, absolutely nothing special this evening, aside from the usual selection of new British and global releases, such as Leeds' Corinne Bailey Rae, Galway's NewDad, South Korea's Sailor Honeymoon, and New York's Model/Actriz.
And a set too, for FUV's sweet friend and our Sunday compadre for so many years, Bob Sherman, who passed away on Tuesday at 90. His ageless enthusiasm for young artists and a cross genre of music was an inspiration and continues to be.
That's "UKNY," Sundays 11p.m.-midnight, on 90.7 FM, streaming online and in the Archives after broadcast.
