UKNY for July 18
Emmy the Great, the Hong Kong-born, London-raised songwriter Emma-Lee Moss, won't release her fourth album, titled April/月音, until October, but it's the culmination of a nearly three-year odyssey. She returned to Hong Kong in 2017 for an overdue visit, only to be swept away by the transitionary beauty, sorrow, and upheaval of the country. On tonight's UKNY at 11, something from this lovely new album, inspired by that extended stay, and recorded at Greenpoint's Creamery Studio.
Also on this too-steamy summer night, cool new releases from Londoners Poppy Ajudha and beabadoobee's Bea Kristi, Manchester's Doves and Hann, Brighton's The Go! Team, and Welsh dreamer Green Gartside, who has released two acoustic Anne Briggs covers under his own name, rather than as his longtime moniker of Scritti Politti.
Dynamic composer and saxophonist Nubya Garcia has released another epic track from her forthcoming debut album, Source, due out on August 21; she is one of the leading lights of London's thriving contemporary jazz scene.
All of that and much more on UKNY, Saturdays 11pm-midnight on 90.7, also streaming online and available in the Weekend Archives for up to two weeks after broadcast.
