UKNY for July 17
Winner of the 2014 Mercury Prize for their debut album, Dead, Edinburgh's Young Fathers hadn't released new music since 2018's Cocoa Sugar, which also earned the trio that year's Scottish Album of the Year. That fortunately changed this past week: Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham 'G' Hastings — who mark their 15th year of making music together in 2023 — have a brand new song which again picks up on the brooding beauty and intensity of their last album. The band calls the single an early start to their fourth full-length release and on tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m., I'll kick off the show with Young Fathers' very welcome return.
Australia-based Sampa the Great headed back to Zambia during the pandemic, where she was born, and found fresh inspiration for her second album, As Above, So Below, released September 9. She'll also be here in New York, playing Summerstage at Brooklyn's Von King Park next Saturday, July 23.
London's Loyle Carner is also back with an emotionally charged, caustic new single and Leeds' ever-fantastic Yard Act have found a friend, fan, and new collaborator in an unexpected session musician: Elton John. Liverpool's Kathryn Williams released her 15th album, Night Drives, on Friday, and we'll hear something from that as well as the first taste of Hinako Omori's forthcoming remix album, a journey with friends ..., which expands upon her 2022 album, a journey ... with reconfigured approaches.
Global discoveries always on "UKNY," Sunday nights from 11 p.m.-midnight on 90.7 FM, streaming online, and found in the Weekend Archives after broadcast.
