It's a summer of great debuts! The super-buzzy Manchester quartet Westside Cowboy is gearing up for the release of their debut album, It Goes On, on August 21 and on "UKNY" at 7 p.m. tonight, the latest single from the band. What started off as a lark for the group now has them on the road all summer long — including a support gig for The Maccabees at London's Alexandra Palace last night.
Another official debut that's been long overdue comes from New York's Slow Fiction, whose first album, dollhouse, arrives on August 7 on the Tight Knit label, entirely self-produced by the quintet. Slow Fiction, who've supported Wet Leg and English Teacher on tour, will join Swervedriver's forthcoming Raise at 35 road trip in August, with shows at White Eagle Hall on August 28 and Music Hall of Williamsburg on August 29. Brooklyn's Chanel Beads, aka Shane Lavers, has cheekily used the same title for the band's second album as he did for the first — Your Day Will Come — and it's terrific.
Alewya's first official album, Zero, is one of the boldest, most rewarding discoveries, a silky, sultry collection of songs that draws on the London-based artist's Egyptian and Ethiopian roots, as well as her years growing up in Saudi Arabia and visual arts background.
Also, Berlin-based Brutalismas 3000 connects with Underworld, Peggy Gou has a just-in-time summer anthem, Leeds sextet Adult DVD announced their debut, London's Little Grandad release a third single, and Antony Szmierek has a third track out from his forthcoming Decoding Birdsong.
That's "UKNY," Sundays from 7-8 p.m., on 90.7FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast.
