UKNY for July 11
Toronto's Tamara Lindeman, who records as The Weather Station, is my special guest on tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m. Her fifth album, Ignorance, is a marvel of songwriting — Lindeman, propels herself into the tempest of the climate emergency conversation with lyrics that convey her frustration, fury, and hope that somehow, something can be done before it's too late.
She also works with a full band on this new album, expanding each song with intricate arrangements, often with a jazzy undertow. In our conversation in the first half of this evening's show, Lindeman talks about the ideas that built Ignorance, and her own identity as a climate activist; we'll play several tracks off of Ignorance too.
In addition, music from other artists who address the earth, climate, and nature in their own recent songwriting, like the Iceland-beguiled Damon Albarn, Hebridean wanderer Dot Allison, and tireless champion of Africa and African artists, Angélique Kidjo.
Random thoughts from Isle of Wight's Wet Leg too, and Australia's Julia Jacklin and RVG hook up for a cool cover.
That's "UKNY," Sundays 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7, streaming online, and available in the Weekend Archives.
