Alfa Mist, the East Ham producer, composer, and pianist, is part of a compelling wave of young British jazz musicians who've fluidly redefined the genre, deftly adding elements of grime, hip hop, breakbeats, and classical arrangements. Back in mid-March 2020, he sold out two concerts at London's EartH, right at the edge of the first pandemic lockdown, in support of his acclaimed 2019 album, Structuralism, and a 2020 solo piano project, On My Ones.

On April 23, Alfa Mist releases Bring Backs, his first album for his new label, ATO, and on tonight's UKNY at 11, an early tease of that outstanding collection. Also, Bristol's Laura Kidd, who released four albums as She Makes War, now records as Penfriend and I'll have her latest single. Lou Hayter, ex of New Young Pony Club, breathes fresh life into a 1980 New York odyssey, and Arlo Parks finally releases her magnificent debut, Collapsed in Sunbeams.

And the gloriously caustic Squid recruit another experimental soul, Martha Skye Murphy, for the band's forthcoming debut on Warp, Bright Green Field. Squid will be part of the digital SXSW 2021 music festival, along with Dublin-born, London-based Sinead O'Brien and another Londoner, Anna B Savage, the latter who just released her arresting debut album, A Common Turn, on Friday.

A lot to get to on tonight's UKNY, Sundays 11p.m.-midnight, on 90.7, streaming online, and available after broadcast in the Weekend Archives.
