UKNY for January 26
Rebecca Lucy Taylor, who records as Self Esteem, has spent the last handful of years touring behind her breakthrough, Mercury Prize nominated second solo album, 2021's Prioritise Pleasure — and she also spent the end of 2023 and start of 2024 with an impressive stint as Sally Bowles in Cabaret in London's West End. (She also visited FUV for a "UKNY" session.)
Last year, along with a single with Moonchild Sanelly, Taylor finally had the time to finish her third album, A Complicated Woman. The first official single from that album finally landed last week and tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m. will lead off with this well-timed anthem for 2025, "Focus is Power."
Hong Kong-born, London-based Miso Extra is extra focused on her solo debut album, Earcandy, and has a new song from it, and Scottish duo KuleeAngee drop their second single to date ahead of their debut EP. I'll dig deeper into new albums by Lauren Mayberry, The Weather Station, and jasmine 4.t. There are also fresh releases via Sweden's Yukimi and British-Sierra Leonean rapper and poet Nadeem Din-Gabisi.
That's "UKNY,"late Sunday nights from 11p.m.-midnight, on 90.7 FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast for non-night owl listening.
