UKNY for February 19
The brilliance of the late Burt Bacharach, who died on February 8th, was far from restricted to his string of colossal hits in the Sixties and Seventies with Hal David, or even his later chapters with songwriting partners Carole Bayer Sager and Elvis Costello.
In fact, the American composer's mercurial time signatures, tricky arrangements, and sophisticated orchestrations seduced a slew of British and international artists from the mid-Eighties on: Bacharach and David's songs were an integral influence on the Bristol sound, trip hop, Britpop, and far more. Bacharach even played a career-spanning set at Glastonbury, commanding the main Pyramid Stage in 2015 at the age of 87 — with famous fans like Adele and Will Young spotted in the audience.
So on tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m., I'll touch on some of the more contemporary British and global artists who either covered Bacharach's songs, sampled them, or even wrote or performed with the man himself.
An all-Burt hour with The Wild Bunch, Pulp, Mono, Pizzicato Five, Everything But the Girl, Oasis, Elvis Costello, Lianne La Havas, and others who, like me, are forever grateful for Bacharach's genius.
That's "UKNY," Sundays from 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7 FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast.
