UKNY for February 12
The Leeds quartet English Teacher were on a short tour 'round the UK while I was in London earlier this month — I didn't catch them there (I just missed their London gig), but will do so when they finally come to the States this March, to play both the the New Colossus Festival and SXSW. On tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m., a new single from the gloriously eccentric and electrifying vocalist and lyricist Lily Fontaine, guitarist Lewis Whiting, bassist Nicholas Eden and drummer Douglas Frost.
I did have the chance to catch Young Fathers' galvanizing sold-out, in-store show at London's Rough Trade East on February 3, to mark the release of their fourth — and most joyful — album, Heavy Heavy. I'll play a couple of tracks from this excellent new album — and it's really not hyperbolic to say that the Edinburgh trio might be one of the best live bands you'll ever see: all intense, playful, fluid, cheeky, muscular salvation.
I also saw Cardiff's ferocious Panic Shack opening for Metronomy at HERE at Outernet, a fairly new venue in the heart of central London, and I'll get to a couple songs from both groups too.
Also, new releases from Django Django who connect with their old friend, Self Esteem's Rebecca Lucy Taylor; the London-based American-Canadian duo Tommy Lefroy (who opened for Samia at Brooklyn Steel last night); Rachel Chinouriri with and without Mac Wetha; and South Africa's Beatenberg.
And a pair of songs from Burt Bacharach too — the American composer who meant the most to me.
All that and more on "UKNY," Sundays 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7 FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast.
