UKNY for December 13
West London's Arlo Parks doesn't release her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, until January 29th, but the series of singles that have previewed its release, and her 2019 EPs Super Sad Generation and Sophie, give a very good sense of the empathy and candor that defines the 20-year-old musician's songwriting. Her perspective on trauma and healing dovetails with her work in mental health advocacy and support, which she's addressed on songs like "Black Dog."
On tonight's UKNY at 11, another preview of Arlo's forthcoming album, plus new releases from another forthright Londoner, Nilüfer Yanya, Scotland's Mogwai, and Lagos's Made Kuti, son of Femi and grandson of Fela. Also, South Korea's 박혜진 Park Hye Jin returns with a cool collaboration and Belfast's Bicep has released another single from the duo's new album, Isles, also due out in January. And Public Service Broadcasting's J. Willgoose has spent his lockdown months recording a solo side project as Late Night Final.
There will be a wintry New York City set too, in anticipation of the snowy forecast in the week ahead.
That's UKNY, Sundays from 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7FM, streaming online and available in the Weekend Archives after broadcast.
