UKNY For August 5
August is a month meant for lazy daydreaming, real time spent away from desks and deadlines, and indulging in guilty pleasures too — like sleek, made for BBC Radio 1 pop music. Tonight's UKNY at 11 indulges in some heady new pop, rock and electronic releases via Manchester newcomers Koalas, 2017 Mercury Prize nominee Sampha, and south London's Jessie Ware, who returns after three years of life changes with a third album on the horizon.
Also, the effervescent Izzy Bizu, currently on tour with Coldplay (she recorded an FUV Live session on Thursday) and a just-released single from Toronto's charismatic Weaves, shortlisted for the Polaris Prize.
Finally, a song co-written by the great American playwright, actor, director, essayist, musician and lyricist Sam Shepard, who died late last month. His departure is unfathomable and crushing; he offered generations of artists an endless well of inspiration, rebellion and escape.
