UKNY for August 4
New Delhi rockers Peter Cat Recording Co. has quietly amassed a fervent following not only in their native India, but Stateside and worldwide. When their headlining September gigs in New York were announced this spring at both Brooklyn Steel and Irving Plaza, they promptly sold out, long before the band's new album, BETA, drops this Friday, August 9. (Their debut tour in the States in 2023 elicited that same kind of excitement, selling out multiple gigs in New York and Los Angeles.)
Accompanying BETA's release, Peter Cat Recording Co. kick off 77-date world tour, including some sold-out opening dates with Khruangbin, beginning in Berkeley, California on August 14th. On tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m., a swerving guitar groove from Peter Cat Recording Co.'s soon-to-arrive BETA.
After two EPs, the return of the sprawling London collective Mandrake Handshake, which includes as many as ten musicians (or at least seven). They have a slow-burn, stoner's drift of a new single (and a new label). Nubya Garcia continues to gear up for the September 20 release of her second album, Odyssey, with another track from the album, and Porridge Radio return with the first single from Dana Margolin and company's fourth album, Clouds in the Sky, They Will Always Be There For Me.
Last autumn, I played an early single from the London quintet Man/Woman/Chainsaw and the band is back with a new single, an EP ahead (Eazy Peazy), and more self-described orchestral mayhem. Also in tonight's hour: Exeter's Soot Sprite, Dublin-London's Kynsy, London's TSHA, and Bristol's Mould, who released their self-titled debut EP on Friday.
British and global releases on "UKNY," Sundays 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast.
