UKNY for August 15
Amsterdam's Nana Adjoa doesn't release her debut album, Big Dreaming Ants, until September 24 on Bloomer Records, but the singles previewing it are a marvelous promise of what's to come. Adjoa studied jazz-focused electric and double bass at Conservatorium van Amsterdam, but her own music is an amalgam of multiple influences, including her own Ghanaian heritage. Earlier this summer, I played the Dutch multi-instrumentalist's "No Room" on "UKNY," and tonight at 11, another song from her very impressive first album.
Also in tonight's mix: Bristol's IDLES and Katy J. Pearson; Oxford's Glass Animals and the eclectic nonet Mandrake Handshake (which was formed at Oxford University); a chamber pop jewel from Melbourne's Thibault; and Johannesburg-based gqom superstar Moonchild Sanelly, who has also collaborated with Beyoncé (Black is King, The Lion King: The Gift) and with Damon Albarn's Africa Express collective.
That's "UKNY" on Saturday nights, 11p.m.-midnight on 90.7 and streaming online, also found in the "Weekend Archives" after broadcast.
