UKNY for August 11
As soon as he released 2022's "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Fallacy," it was clear that Manchester poet, rapper, musician, and former schoolteacher Antony Szmierek had something special; his flow was far more gentle than harsh, but what he had to say was powerful, a thoughtful response to an overwhelming world. He's released a couple of EPs, Poems to Dance To and Seasoning, and he's collaborated with Jacuna People and Porij. It's always a happy day when a new Szmierek single drops — he has a debut album on the horizon next year — and at 11 p.m. on "UKNY," I'll play his latest release, "Rafters," which follows the path of a piece of confetti, drifting in air.
Also tonight, a third song released last week from Fontaines D.C.'s upcoming Romance. Berlioz, who plays Brooklyn Paramount on December 4, brings peaceful vibes, and London's Miso Extra takes a deep cleansing breath for "Slow Down." Brooklyn-based The Dare amps up for '00s indie sleaze with a Justine Frischmann-style curl of the lip.
Plus, Wings of Desire, Nia Archives, the Soweto Gospel Choir x Groove Terminator and more.
An hour of (mostly) new British and global releases on "UKNY," Sundays 11p.m.-midnight, on 90.7FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast.
