UKNY for April 9
Ahead of Underworld's return to Coachella on April 15 and 22 — they were last there in 2016 — the adventurous (and legendary) duo of Rick Smith and Karl Hyde have released a slinky blast of a new single that they played live (along with three other new songs) at recent March gigs in Bristol and at London's Royal Albert Hall, the latter for the Teenage Cancer Trust series. Although no album has been announced yet, Smith and Hyde are gearing up for their first substantive release since their 2018-19 Drift project, dropping bold hints along the way.
On tonight's "UKNY" at 11 p.m., the voluptuous propulsion of Underworld's just-released scarlet-hued song, plus Manchester's tempestuous Mandy, Indiana, the mysterious, quirky duo Two Shell, and more from Nia Archives' fantastic new drum 'n' bass-sweetened EP, Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against That Wall.
Kate Stables and company—This Is the Kit—are back with new music too, the first song from Careful of Your Keepers, due out on June 9 and produced by Gruff Rhys. And Daughter's first album together in seven years, Stereo Mind Game, dropped on Friday and I'll dig more deeply into that as well.
Also, since Self Esteem (Music Hall of Williamsburg, April 12) and Depeche Mode (Madison Square Garden on April 14) are in the neighborhood this week, songs from them as well.
That's "UKNY," Sunday nights 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7 FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast.
