UKNY For April 8
A premiere of an FUV Live session with adventurous Scottish composer Anna Meredith is slated for tonight's UKNY at 11. Anna, who won Scottish Album of the Year in 2016 for her debut, Varmints, doesn't take kindly to genre restrictions — she freely blurs the boundaries between electronic, classical, rock, pop, ambient, and jazz. Her compositions are visual — she sketches a plan of every song before writing a note, gauging its journey — and the result is tantalizing, visceral, and delightfully unpredictable. Anna will debut a multimedia show with 59 Productions, called Five Telegrams, as part of the BBC Proms in July and opening the Edinburgh International Festival in August.
Since all things Scottish are being celebrated in New York for Tartan Week, we'll also hear from Orkney's Erland Cooper and Outer Hebridean singer and songwriter Calum Buchanan, who records as the Sea Atlas. And we'll hear from another islander, New Zealand's Ruban Nielson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, with something from the band's funky and bold new album, Sex and Food.
