Every June, New York Music Month, the city’s official music festival presented by the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment, celebrates New York’s vibrant music community. It's a month of free events for artists, industry professionals, and fans.
This year, WFUV teamed up with our friends at Co-Sign for the "Radio City Concert Series" and I hosted a "NY Slice Showcase" at Brooklyn's Market Hotel on June 23 with Bodega, Planta Industrial and H31R (who stepped in last minute after an emergency sidelined Katzin).
It was a night to remember, bringing together three exceptional acts that each delivered something unique and unforgettable.
I was incredibly grateful to have JWords and Maassai of the dynamic duo H31R (pronounced “heir” or “air”) open the evening. Their innovative and experimental sound combines hypnotic beats with razor-sharp lyrical flow. They held the audience transfixed from the very first moment. Their rap game is truly top tier, and they brought a powerful, positive energy that set the tone for the night.
Next up, Bronx-based band Planta Industrial hit the stage like a tornado, kicking off their set with a running mosh pit that erupted in the middle of the floor. Blending Spanish and English lyrics with infectious charisma, frontmen Saso and akathedarknighthad the crowd jumping, shouting, and singing along. They, along with the rest of their crew, are creating something entirely their own, fusing bachata, punk, and boundless energy into a thrilling new sound.
Closing out the evening was indie rock powerhouse BODEGA, who absolutely tore the roof off the place with a riveting live performance. Their set created an atmosphere where the line between band and audience seemed to disappear; everyone moved together as one organism. With percussion pushed boldly to the forefront and songs that are both infectious and exhilarating, BODEGA showcased why they remain at the top of their game, seamlessly weaving together multiple genres into a sound that is distinctly and brilliantly their own. BODEGA release their next album, All Inside Aquarium, on October 9.
Finally, my FUV colleague Benham Jones helped me keep the evening expertly held together via his DJ set; his eclectic selections kept the energy flowing between performances and helped create a welcoming, celebratory atmosphere throughout the night.
