This  FUV Live session is also available as a podcast, "FUV Live Sessions." We're elevating WFUV's long history of live sessions and interviews via a podcast that you can find on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Podcasts. New episodes drop every Monday.

City Winery was the locale for a live performance this autumn with three of the five members of Mt. Joy, back with a fourth album, Hope We Have Fun.

Singer and guitarist Matt Quinn, guitarist Sam Cooper, and keyboardist Jackie Miclau chose an eight-song set of songs from that new release as well as older selections, including "Silver Lining" from their 2018 self-titled debut.

Arriving seven years after that first album, Hope We Have Fun, is a great snapshot of where Mt. Joy finds itself today as collaborative artists and friends. Their songwriting craft has never been sharper, especially after having spent countless years touring and seeing what resonates with their audiences.

One single from the new album, “Lucy,” has become a crowd and radio favorite. During my conversation with  Quinn, we talked about the delicate balancing act between fact and fiction when writing about other people’s stories. He also talked about the importance of patience in songwriting and why it's sometimes necessary to shelve an idea, take a walk, and come back to it later.

Thankfully, Quinn's miniature schnauzer provides him ample opportunities to wander, contemplate, and let ideas develop.

Hope We Have Fun is not only the album title, but the closing track — and a bit of a mantra for Quinn: have fun while chasing what we will become.
