Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral election.

It was a historic victory in many ways. New York City saw the largest turnout for a non-presidential election in all five boroughs since 1969, when  John V. Lindsay won the mayoral election. Although this year was shy of that record turnout of 2,458,203 votes, over two million New York residents cast ballots.

Mamdani will be the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century. He’s also the first Muslim and South Asian mayor.

Louis Brickner, a Fordham student from Rhode Island who voted in New York City, told WFUV News that he was excited about the results.

“With everything going on within the entire country, I think that I'm pretty happy,” he said “I think that it’s a glimpse of hope.”

Listen how the night unfolded at a Mamdani watch party via the player above as WFUV News's Sienna Reinders speaks with fellow reporters Alexandra Pfau and Andrew McDonald, who were in the field on election night.

One supporter at the party, Alexei Gannon, said Mamdani’s victory is “a win for politics that works for working class people – and not the other way around.”

This ran as the special election episode of the What’s What podcast from WFUV News on November 5, 2025.
