This FUV Live session is also available as a podcast, "FUV Live Sessions." We're elevating WFUV's long history of live sessions and interviews via a podcast that you can find on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Podcasts. New episodes drop every Monday.
Since 2016, Lucy Dacus has done several sessions for FUV Live, on her own and via her side project, the brilliant boygenius with Julian Baker and Phoebe Bridgers.
Dacus released her fourth solo album, Forever is a Feeling, earlier this year and her well-crafted writing has continued to impress as sharp and insightful. She’s got a brilliant knack for thoughtful turns of phrases that cut right through the heart of her songs.
Some of my favorite lyrics come by way of “Best Guess," notably:
I love your body,
I love your mind.
They will change, so will mine.
But you're my best guess at the future.
For this FUV Live session, Dacus gave us three songs — "Best Guess," "Ankles," and "Bullseye" — that she played with her bandmates, guitarist Alan Parker and violinist and keyboardist Phoenix Rousiamanis during a set at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn.
In my interview with Dacus, she talked about the future and the feelings that looking forward brings to her — hence the album's title. We also talked about her lasting relationship with religion and how she is still surprised at moments that these thoughts surface.
Forever is a Feeling is as rich in sound as it is in philosophy. There are swelling cellos, guitars and drums that make my heart jump. It's another great collection of songs that continues to grow in meaning and attachment the more I listen.
It is always an absolute pleasure to speak with Lucy and experience her music.
