This FUV Live session is also available as a podcast, "FUV Live Sessions." We're elevating WFUV's long history of live sessions and interviews via a podcast that you can find on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Podcasts. New episodes drop every Monday.
For me, Josh Ritter is one of the great artists of our time. I first got to know him through his music, but over the years I've also enjoyed his writing. In fact, when this renaissance man came to WFUV back in 2022 to talk about his novel, The Great Glorious Goddamn of It All, he also brought FUV a painting that he did, which now hangs in our main on-air studio.
Ritter's latest gift to us is his eleventh album, I Believe in You, My Honeydew. In support of that album, he dropped by Studio A for an FUV Live session with solo performances of "Wild Ways," "Truth is a Dimension (Both Invisible and Binding)," and "Thunderbird."
In our conversation, he explained that he’s made all of his records with the help of a mysterious presence, a muse which he's named “Honeydew.” This record is directly dedicated to that invisible partner of inspiration — and Ritter fully acknowledges his belief in this extraordinary force.
I Believe in You, My Honeydew is also a contemplation on humanity and righteousness through science and faith. One of its most profound songs is "Truth is a Dimension (Both Invisible and Binding)." It’s a love song with lyrics that references ham sandwiches and an "unassuming patch of dusty sky" that is "fifty billion stars a billion light years wide." The scope and breadth of Ritter's creativity is charming and wonderful on this track — and the whole of I Believe in You, My Honeydew.
