Tommy Cormier originally started Golden Alphabet in Tucson, Arizona in 2003. He's since moved to Brooklyn and has continued making music under this moniker with a revolving cast of band members.

He basically has an open door policy when it comes to collaboration. I've been a fan of Golden Alphabet since "NY Slice" started in 2021. That first year, we had so many submissions that I just didn't get to his music until the next year when I played "Crazy Pie," which was crazy good.

I heard from Cormier again later that year when he sent me his next song, "Jumping Castle Full of Great Ideas," and I thought to myself, "Man this guy really is full of great ideas!" I played that song too, and told him to stay in touch. I'm so grateful he did because he kept sharing great new songs, most recently "Thinkin' 'Bout Trout."

Cormier and Golden Alphabet is the real deal. He is so talented and he seems to make music not to get rich or famous, but just because he wants to make it — or needs to make it. I am so happy we got to have him in to the station for a "NY Slice Session" and pop quiz.

I'm going to be keeping an eye and ear on Golden Alphabet and you should too — watch Cormier's solo performance of "I'm a Fake" and "Pay-n-Peel" plus his "NY Slice" pop quiz.

[Recorded 8/7/24; Engineered by Jim O'Hara and Erin Merriman. Produced by Meghan Offtermatt. Videographers: Louisa Schramm, Bella Lipayon, Adithi Vimalanathan and  Olivia Iannaccone.]
