FUV Five Favorite Concerts: Eric Holland
During the 2014 FUV fall member drive, we're shining a spotlight on live concerts and performances. The FUV on-air staffers compiled individual lists of five memorable and marvelous shows that have stayed with them over the years, for one reason or another.
Eric Holland (The Alternate Side's weekend host, WFUV guest host):
As long as we can all agree this is absolutely impossible, here you go ...
1. The Replacements at Forest Hills Stadium (September 19, 2014)
Never have I waited so long to see a band, never have I had such high expectations, and never have they been met—check that—surpassed.
in such a glorious way as The Mats with The Hold Steady & Deer Tick, and a killer group of FUV pals just piling on.
2. Iggy & The Stooges at Terminal 5 (August 8, 2008)
Any Iggy Pop show is a strong contender for a list like this, but to get all the essential Stooges material with the Ashetons (Ron would be dead five months later) and Mike Watt on bass made this one that good.
3. Pearl Jam at the Alex Baldwin Amphitheater on Maui (February 21, 1998)
I was living in Honolulu in those days and was able to fly over. Pearl Jam was five albums into their career on the Yield tour and taking no prisoners.
4. The Pixies at The Zepp in Fukuoka, Japan (December 3, 2005)
Despite them being one of my faves, I had never seen The Pixies in the '80s so I jumped on this one as I was living only 50 miles or so from this nifty 2,500 person capacity venue and Kim Deal was still involved. It would have been worth a trip ten times as long.
5. Rolling Stones at The Orpheum in Boston (September 8, 2002)
This was the intimate theater show on the Licks tour when they played stadiums, arenas, and theaters in a handful of U.S. cities. I was lucky enough to get the job of reporting on the Boston shows. Not only was this the best of the three Boston gigs, it was the best I've ever seen them period.
