Philadelphia's Dr. Dog has never been a band to repeat themselves, even when they revisit old material, as they did recently with 2016's The Psychedelic Swamp. For Toby Leaman and Scott McMicken, who have been friends and bandmates for decades, pushing their own boundaries is the name of the game.

On Dr. Dog's new album, Critical Equation, they left the comfort of their city and their own studios for the first time and headed out West. On the group's recent visit to Studio A, we talked about the ways they’ve stretched their creative muscles over the past couple of years, and the album they self-released under the radar, Abandoned Mansion. We got to hear a song from that album and, of course, songs from Critical Equation, the latest release from this ever-evolving and adventurous band.
