CT Governor Signs Gun Control Bill
Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy signed a bill today addressing issues of gun violence, mental health, and school safety.
The groundbreaking bill includes an expansion of Connecticut's assault weapons ban and a ban on the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines.
Malloy says he hopes the bill sets an example for the rest of the country in the aftermath of the Newtown shooting.
"We can never undo the senseless tragedy that took place on December 14 or those tragedies that play themselves out on a daily basis in our cities," he said, "But we can take action here in Connecticut and we can make Connecticut towns and cities safer and this bill does that."
Nicole Hockley lost her son in the Newtown shooting and hopes Washington passes similar laws.
"I can't begin to tell you how much it means to us that our voices have been heard," she said, "We have said from the outset that we want Newtown to be known not for our tragedy but for transformation. This law marks the beginning of that turning point."
Some of the changes will take place immediately and Governor Malloy says all changes will be implemented by August 1.
