Cavalcade for September 6

The Kennedys' Pete and Maura return with Smoketree, a new album of original songs, and one inspired by a significant pop-culture figure. 

For the song "Girl on a Motorcycle," the Kennedys' image is of Marianne Faithfull in her 1960s full flowering, and the wistful song joins others with social and environmental themes, all near to the very dear hearts and fine musical skills of this husband-and-wife singing and songwriting team. 

Sheryl Crow and Jesse Welles join forces on a new and original topical song called "Freedom Bus." Queens of the Stone Age turn the heat down a little for a smoldering new tune called "Insignificant Other." Guitar star Johnny Marr churns up some Smiths riffs on his latest, "It's Time." 

And 'cause comfort food hits the spot on a holiday weekend, the "Cavalcade Golden Anniversary LP Crate Dig" fills the 6 p.m. hour with the album releases of September 1976, including Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, the Bee Gees' Children of the World, and Earth, Wind & Fire's Spirit. They were a few of the new records for back-to-school bins in '76, showing 50-year staying power on this Labor Day Weekend 2026.
