This FUV Live session is also available as a podcast, "FUV Live Sessions." We're elevating WFUV's long history of live sessions and interviews via a podcast that you can find on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Podcasts. New episodes drop every Monday.

Amid a growing crop of up-and-coming country and roots songwriters, Liam Duncan, who records as Boy Golden, is unmistakable in his aw-shucks sincerity and benevolent ambition.

His most recent effort and third full-length album, Best of Our Possible Lives, brings notable sonic cohesion even when quickly moving between country, indie, folk, and, the blues, and the lyrics almost always land sunny-side up, which feels like a feat for an album that opens on a tune called "Suffer."

I had the privilege of catching-up with Duncan in Studio A during a recent stopover in New York City. True to his artistic alter-ego, he was gracious and generous, sharing much about the process of making his latest record, the healing inherent in creativity, and the culture of talented session players in his hometown scene of Winnipeg.

It was cool to talk with a bandleader so obviously in his moment of glow-up, although (as Liam vulnerably expressed) also going through one of the most financially challenging moments of his career. One can only hope these kinds of growing pains (too big for the Econoline and too indie for the tour bus) make for the stuff of the next Boy Golden album.

Backed up by a couple members of his band Church of Better Daze (old friends/multi-instrumentalists/vocalists FONTINE and Austin Parachoniak), Duncan played three stellar tunes from Best of Our Possible Lives: "New Orleans,"  "Like A Child," and the title track of the record.

[Recorded: 5/18/26: Engineered by Jim O'Hara, Holden Buckley, Alessandro Badalamenti, and Stacy Tran. Produced by Meghan Suma. Videographers: Olivia Iannaccone, Gina Slavin, Dylan Duong, Kellie McGuinness and Danny Cifelli]
