Brooklyn's John Brodeur has been on the New York music scene for a while now. He originally released music under his own name and then as Bird Streets for a 2018 eponymous album.

I didn't catch onto Brodeur until his second Bird Streets album, 2022's Lagoon, by way of the song "Let You Down" — and I was blown away by how good it was.

I really got into Lagoon and Bird Streets quickly became a favorite New York band, with the power pop and rock that I craved in the absence of new music from another band I love, Nada Surf.

In January, the first series of "NY Slice" live gigs launched and Brodeur  was gracious enough to perform for us. Based on that thrilling set at City Vineyard, the next step was getting Bird Streets to the Bronx for NY Slice session in Studio A.

The timing was great because Brodeur he had just finished a third album, The Escape Artist, a four-year journey that he released in October. That album, produced by Jason Falkner in Los Angeles, includes guest artists Gina Romantini, Zach Jones, and Oscar Albis Rodriguez.

For this "NY Slice" session, Brodeur and bandmates Jeff Litman (guitar, vocals), Konrad Meissner (drums, vocals) and Tia Vincent (bass and vocals) played a pair of songs from The Escape Artist: "Mistaker" and "Run for Our Lives." Brodeur also took the "NY Slice" pop quiz and talked up his love of Michael Penn and Aimee Mann.
