FUV Scores Big with Journalism Awards
Once again this year, FUV’s news and sports departments have hauled in more than two dozen major awards. These include recent recognition for work by both our professional and student staffs from the Public Radio News Directors Incorporated, the New York State Associated Press, and the New York State Broadcasters Association, among other organizations. It's quite a list!
PRNDI awarded FUV’s professional news team a second place award for Documentary and three wins for our News Director George Bodarky: first place wins for Best Interview and Best Spot News, and a second place win for Best Documentary.
Sandy coverage by FUV’s Claudia Morell (a Fordham graduate student) earned her a PRNDI award for Spot News, in addition to a second place win for Newscast. Two other student reporters also took home PRNDI awards: 2013 Fordham graduate Will Germain (first place for Newscast) and 2013 Fordham graduate Julie Clark (second place win for Soft Feature).
The New York State Associated Press singled out student reporter Connor Ryan (Fordham College ’15) for Best News Story and 2012 Fordham graduate Kyle Kesses for Best Sports Coverage. Honorable Mentions from the New York State Associated Press include George Bodarky in The Art Athens General Excellence of Individual Reporting category (for his coverage of Superstorm Sandy), Kyle Kesses (Best News Special/Documentary), Fordham grad student Jake Neher (Best News Series), Claudia Morell (Best Regularly Scheduled Local News Program), and Michael Watts (Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business ’15) (Sports Coverage). Kyle Kesses also won Best Sports News from the New York Press Club.
On top of these honors, FUV copped an impressive five awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association. George Bodarky won in the following categories: Best Public Service Announcement/Campaign for Strike A Chord, Best Individual Public Affairs Program or Series for Cityscape, and Best Spot News for “Sandy’s Aftermath.” The New York State Broadcasters Association also gave a nod to FUV for Best Commentary/Editorial for “Roommating 10,” and Best Feature for “Big Andy, Little Andy, and the Gift of Hope” by 2013 Fordham graduate Alex Smith.
Our public service campaign Strike A Chord earned another accolade for the work it's done to raise community awareness of mental health issues. The Coalition of Behavioral Health Agencies, Inc., an advocacy organization for New York’s behavioral health community, presented FUV with the 2013 Coalition Leadership Award for sponsoring programs aimed to de-stigmatize mental illness and addiction disorders, thereby encouraging individuals to seek treatment. Previous winners have included Mike Wallace of CBS News and Dr. Oliver Sacks.
