Whitney Museum to Open Last Biennial Exhibit at Madison Avenue Location

Chief Curator at the Whitney Donna De Salvo says the Biennial's been a part of the museum's DNA since the exhibition first ran in 1932.  But 2014 will be the last year this diverse showcase of American art will be held in the Whitney's building on Madison Avenue, before the museum moves to a new location downtown in the Meatpacking District. 

De Salvo says the museum's almost 50 years in the building have been incredible.  But she says it's time for change.

"You know, when it was built in 1966, it was a different art world. The nature of the way art was made was different; the needs of the museum were different. And I think with this new building, it's equally going to be an extraordinary building for art and for artists."

De Salvo says the new building will hold about 5 times more artwork, and provide better spaces for installations using video and other non-traditional media. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's taking over the old building when the Whitney moves in Spring 2015. But De Salvo says the Whitney's maintaining ownership.
