Seated near the entrance of the New York Botanical Gardens is a larger than life 3-D sculptural interpretation of all the flowers that Post-Impressionist artist, Vincent Van Gogh, ever painted. The mixed media piece is part of the gardens’ new exhibit, “Van Gogh’s Flowers.”

Red poppies, pink peonies, and blue irises are among the many colorful blooms that are digitally printed onto the installation’s crescent shaped wall. These circle around a large-scale version of Van Gogh’s sunflower painting.

“We've kind of created a floral “Where's Waldo” where you can just spend so much time spotting flowers,” said one of the installation's artist’s Catherine Borowski.

Evan Fernandes is one of the visitors enjoying the installation.

“It's very spring-like after coming out of the city in the winter. It was so honestly just depressing,” said the first time visitor. “Seeing stuff like this and it all being so bright and just pretty, honestly just a breath of fresh air.”

In contrast to the mixed media art pieces, there are actual flowers that were grown to be part of Van Gogh’s exhibit.

As you wander inside the garden’s greenhouse conservatory there's a mix of real pink peonies and roses, and blue irises, as well as steel versions of Van Gogh’s flower paintings made by artist Amie Jacobsen.

“I think that all artists, even all art, even in its most abstract forms, are really people responding to nature and trying to capture the magic,” Jacobsen said.

The exhibit officially opens on May 24, but for now visitors can enjoy walking past the outdoor installation of bursting color as they enter the gardens.
