UKNY for November 6
The London collective SAULT doesn't tour, nor do they make public appearances. But this group with a mutable, mysterious lineup — although producer Inflo (Dean Josiah Cover) and singer Cleo Sol are at its heart — have released an astonishing 11 albums since 2019, not including singles and an EP, X, which came out in October. They were nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2021 for one of those albums, Untitled (Rise). Not surprisingly, they didn't perform for the ceremony's concert.
The occasion of a SAULT album drop has also become its own theatre — usually preceded days ahead by a notification on the band's social media. Last year's Nine was made available for just 99 days and this past Tuesday, November 1, the group made their most audacious drop — five albums available for just five days for free, if you guessed the right password, gleaned from a message. (The transfer expired on Saturday.)
On "UKNY" tonight at 11 p.m., a track from each of those new albums — 11, Earth, AIIR, Today & Tomorrow, and Untitled (God) — all of which zigzag in different directions, from funk to classical.
Also, new releases from Bristol-based Billy Nomates, London's Sorry, Halifax's The Orielles and Auckland, New Zealand's Fazerdaze.
That's "UKNY," Sundays from 11 p.m.-midnight, on 90.7 FM, streaming online and in the Weekend Archives after broadcast.
