UKNY For August 8

Tonight's UKNY at 11 was partially inspired by the riveting concert presented by Laura Marling, Marika Hackman and Johnny Flynn at Town Hall on Monday night, rich with camaraderie, agile guitarwork and beautiful songwriting. So we'll hear tracks from that talented trio, as well as a brand new single from Sheffield's Richard Hawley from his forthcoming eighth album, London's beguiling Younghusband, and Birmingham's Swim Deep.

Also, a farewell to Cilla Black, who passed away last weekend at the age of 72. Black, an irresistible presence with an impressive bouffant, possessed one of the more distinctive voices of '60s British pop. A former hatcheck girl at the Cavern Club, she befriended the Beatles and was championed by John Lennon, eventually sharing their manager, Brian Epstein. Black brought Liverpool swagger, sweetness and sass to the songs she sang, delivering hits for songwriting teams like Lennon and Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach and Hal David, conquering the charts with her mighty Merseyside voice.

In fact, 50 years ago this coming week, on August 14, 1964, Black taped a performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" here in New York, belting out "September in the Rain." That same episode, eventually broadcast in September, featured the Beatles too, in their second and last performance on the show.

Missed the show? You can catch up to UKNY on demand in the FUV weekend archives up to two weeks after broadcast.
