Sunday Supper: Golden Anniversary, Part 1
In April of 2019, I marked my 50th anniversary as a professional broadcaster. It all began when I was working in college radio and cold-called the operations manager of WMMR in Philadelphia. It turned out they were looking for someone to fill in for my hero, Dave Herman, when he went on vacation, and they were desperate enough they settled on a radio rookie!
I decided to devote three weeks of the "Sunday Supper" to radio highlights of those 50 years. The earliest example on this week’s show is a 1975 visit with Steve Goodman at WXRT in Chicago, just before the release of his first Asylum album, Jessie’s Jig and Other Favorites. Also from the ‘70s is Randy Newman and, from the ‘80s, John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits.
From my 22 years at WFUV, I’ve included three favorites: Joan Baez, Rosanne Cash and David Bromberg performing with Larry Campbell, in a virtual master class for guitarists in Studio A.
This is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Make sure you check Part 2 and Part 3 for more highlights.
